Chapter 10

Matty

Matty swallowed hard. He’d hoped Finn had forgotten about talking to Don Domenico in the excitement of seeing Scott again.

“I don’t think I can.”

“I’ll be right by your side,” Finn promised, stroking Matty’s bare arm, turning Matty into gooseflesh.

“He’s an Acierno.”

“And so am I,” Finn said gently. “But neither of us are the men who ordered the hit on your father. This is the only way to get Nico off your back.”

Matty pressed his lips together. He didn’t want tenderness or logic. He wanted to be left alone by the Aciernos. Well, for except one hot Daddy holding him close. “Okay, okay, we talk.”

“He’s not what you’ll expect.”

Matty grunted. Don Domenico was the head of a Mafia crime family. Matty knew exactly what to expect.

Finn drew Matty down onto the couch and set up his laptop. Within a couple of moments Matty was staring at two pretty young men, each one sitting next to a much larger man. They were cute twinks. Matty would have dismissed them as brainless onesies if he hadn’t known how fucking dangerous they were. Despite the fact they were identical twins, it was easy to tell them apart. The man in a navy shirt looked in the flush of health. The other wearing a cream shirt, was thin and drawn. It wasn’t hard to work out that was Paolo, the one who’d been kidnapped for months.

“Don Domenico, Don Paolo,” Finn started. “Let me introduce Matteo di Salvo.”

The tension could have been cut with a knife.

Then Nico inclined his head. “Mr. di Salvo, thank you for agreeing to talk to us.”

“I didn’t think I had a choice,” Matty said coolly.

“Perhaps not, but I know this is not something you ever wanted to do.”

Matty gritted his teeth to hold back the angry words on the tip of his tongue. “You think I arranged the kidnapping of Don Paolo. I didn’t. You have my movements, my financials. You know I wasn’t involved.”

“I know on the surface it looks like you weren’t,” Nico corrected, “but a deeper analysis shows an account in your name sent money to the man who perpetrated the kidnap.”

“I’m a cop.” Matty turned as Finn groaned.

“Sorry,” Finn muttered.

“As I said, I’m a cop and I would have to be truly fucking—sorry—stupid to put an account in my name to pay someone to hurt a member of the family who killed my father.” The apology had been for cursing and aimed at Finn, no one else. His tone grew colder and colder until he was surprised he wasn’t spitting icicles.

Out of sight of the other men, Finn laid a warm hand on his thigh. Matty covered it with his own hand.

“Mr. di Salvo has a point,” the larger of the two big men said, almost apologetically. “Hi, I’m Ward Tiger. Call me Tiger.”

“He’s mine,” Paolo added, somewhat unnecessarily. By the size of Tiger’s smile, he didn’t seem to mind.

“He does,” Nico agreed, ignoring his brother. “However he’s still not proved it isn’t him.”

“And how am I to prove a negative?” Matty snarled.
